Local Charity Helps Young Teen Gain Independence Through Life-Changing Support

A young teenager living with a life-limiting condition has been given a new sense of freedom and independence, thanks to the support of the The Abel Foundation.

Maxwell, who recently celebrated his 14th birthday, lives with mitochondrial disease—a rare genetic condition that affects the body’s ability to produce energy. Despite the daily challenges he faces, Maxwell now has a renewed sense of confidence after receiving vital support from the charity.

The Abel Foundation funded a specialist adaptation to Maxwell’s wheelchair, enabling him to operate it independently. This development marks a significant step forward in his day-to-day life, allowing him greater mobility and the ability to navigate his surroundings with increased confidence.

The charity works to support individuals and families affected by mitochondrial disease. With no known cure, the condition can be devastating, and the foundation provides a 24-hour support network offering guidance, understanding, and a listening ear to those in need.

Maxwell’s story highlights the tangible impact of community fundraising efforts. Events such as “Music at the Manor” have played a crucial role in enabling grants like his, directly improving the quality of life for young people and their families.

Claire Noakes, Chair of The Abel Foundation, said: “The gift of a smile and a little more independence is something very special, and we are delighted to have helped a wonderful young man like Maxwell achieve exactly that. Knowing that events such as Music at the Manor have directly funded grants like this is incredibly rewarding and a wonderful reminder of the difference community support can make.”

The Abel Foundation extended their congratulations to Maxwell, wishing him all the best as he enjoys his newfound independence.
