The Hawk Conservancy Trust has proudly welcomed its latest Conservation and Research Intern for 2025 – meet Sorcha, a passionate young conservationist whose role is made possible thanks to support from the Cameron Bespolka Trust.

Having grown up visiting the Hawk Conservancy Trust, Sorcha says it’s a dream come true to be part of the team. In just a few weeks, she’s already been busy conducting biodiversity surveys on-site, assisting with small mammal trapping for native bird of prey monitoring, and supporting the Trust’s Research Assistant, Tanith.
Sorcha brings an impressive academic background to the role, with a BSc in Zoology and a Master’s degree in Taxonomy, Biodiversity and Evolution. Her passion for Lepidoptera – especially moths – has driven much of her previous research, and her recent work includes conservation surveys and cetacean research in Scotland.
Sorcha said:
“This internship came along at the perfect time. I’ve always admired the work of the Trust, and now I’m thrilled to be working alongside Jamie and Tanith. I’m learning so much about habitat management, species monitoring, and how we can better support native wildlife.”
A big part of Sorcha’s work involves tracking prey species for native birds of prey by surveying local small mammal populations – essential research for long-term conservation strategies. She’s also brushing up on her analytical skills using tools like R and GIS for data visualisation and environmental mapping.
The internship programme, funded by the Cameron Bespolka Trust, is a partnership deeply aligned with the values of both organisations. Cameron was a young naturalist with a deep love for birds and wildlife, and the Trust set up in his name aims to inspire and empower young people like Sorcha to follow in his footsteps.
The Hawk Conservancy Trust said:
“We’re delighted to welcome Sorcha to the team. Her enthusiasm and dedication are already making a real impact, and it’s a joy to see our on-site conservation work supported by the next generation of nature champions.”
As Sorcha puts it:
“It’s an absolute delight to be a part of the team and the work they do. I can’t wait to see where the rest of the internship takes me!”
