Thousands of at-risk infants – including those born prematurely in Andover and across Hampshire – will receive long-lasting protection against RSV through a new NHS immunisation programme.

Premature babies across England, including those cared for by local NHS services in Hampshire, will soon benefit from a breakthrough immunisation against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) – a leading cause of serious illness and hospitalisation in young children.
From late September, the NHS will offer the long-acting antibody injection nirsevimab to around 7,000 high-risk babies, replacing the older, less effective monthly jab previously given to a smaller number of vulnerable infants.
This single-dose protection is expected to provide up to six months’ immunity during peak RSV season (September to February), delivering over 80% protection compared to the 55% offered by the previous treatment.
Eligible babies include those born before 32 weeks gestation or with complex health conditions such as chronic lung disease, heart defects, or weakened immune systems. Families will be contacted by their specialist neonatal or paediatric teams with details on how to access the immunisation.
RSV infects 90% of children by age two, often causing bronchiolitis or pneumonia. Data shows that premature babies are three times more likely to be hospitalised and ten times more likely to require intensive care due to the virus.
Locally, this rollout supports efforts at hospitals such as Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital, Winchester, and other neonatal services used by Andover families. If uptake reaches 95%, NHS England estimates up to 350 hospital admissions could be prevented, including in paediatric intensive care units.
Unlike vaccines, which prompt the body to create antibodies over time, nirsevimab provides ready-made immune protection, acting as a “suit of armour” for the most vulnerable.
The rollout is part of the NHS’s broader winter preparedness plan and follows last year’s introduction of the RSV vaccine for pregnant women – which is not suitable for babies born before 32 weeks.
The immunisation will also be available in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland following a national agreement with the manufacturer, Sanofi.
For parents in Andover or the surrounding areas with questions about eligibility, your child’s clinical team will provide guidance ahead of the winter season.
