The Healthier You Diabetes Prevention Programme has now supported over 900,000 people since its launch in 2016 – with 166,000 people joining in the past year alone.

This world-leading initiative gives those at risk of Type 2 diabetes the tools to reduce their chances of developing the condition by offering personalised support around healthy eating, staying active, and weight loss. The programme lasts for 9 months, and participants can choose between face-to-face sessions or a digital version, complete with apps, trackers, and virtual health coaches.

Real Results – Andover Residents Encouraged to Act

Participants typically lose over 3kg in weight and reduce their chances of developing diabetes by more than a third (37%). The programme is designed for adults who have been identified as being at high risk of Type 2 diabetes, either by their GP or through a simple online check.

Dr Clare Hambling, NHS England’s Clinical Director for Diabetes and Obesity, said:

“This initiative empowers people to take control of their health. If you’re at risk, getting support early can make a huge difference – and the NHS is here to help.”

“Treat Your Body Like Your Car”

One participant, Graham Lowe, saw dramatic improvements in his health after joining the programme. He went from nearly developing diabetes to improving his blood sugar levels, dropping over 4 stone in weight, and ditching unhealthy habits.

Graham’s advice:

“If you’re not feeling right, speak to your GP. It’s like an MOT for your body – you wouldn’t skip one for your car, so don’t skip it for yourself.”

Know Your Risk

It’s estimated that 2 million people in England are at high risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. The condition can lead to serious complications, including heart disease, sight loss, kidney failure and nerve damage – but it’s often preventable.

You can check your personal risk in just a few minutes using the Diabetes UK ‘Know Your Risk’ tool: www.diabetes.org.uk/know-your-risk.

How to Get Support

Speak to your GP if you’re concerned about your blood sugar or weight.

If you’ve had a blood test that shows you’re at risk, you may be eligible to self-register.
