Patrick Stannah, fifth‑generation member of the Stannah family, has successfully completed the Marathon des Sables, widely regarded as one of the toughest endurance races in the world.

2026 marked the 40th anniversary of the Marathon des Sables, a six‑stage ultra‑marathon held in the Sahara Desert and often described as the ultimate test of endurance running. The race covers a total distance of approximately 271.5 kilometres, with competitors required to carry all essential equipment and food for the duration. Temperatures in the desert regularly reach the mid‑30s, with the course taking runners across hard desert ground, dried riverbeds, dunes and soft sand, often with little shade.
Patrick completed all six stages of the race, including the defining 100‑kilometre stage, which is run through the day and night. This year’s course comprised:
Stage one: 35km with 285m elevation
Stage two: 40.5km with 486m elevation
Stage three: 29.1km with 413m elevation
Stage four: 100km with 721m elevation
Stage five: 42.2km with 424m elevation
Stage six: 23.2km with 238m elevation
Patrick finished the race ranked 747th out of 1,460 starters, completing the course in good physical condition after seven days in the desert.
This was Patrick’s second attempt at the Marathon des Sables, having withdrawn during the third stage in 2023. He returned in 2026 following two years of focused training, coaching and preparation.
Reflecting on the experience, Patrick said, “It’s hard to describe just how demanding the Marathon des Sables is. It’s not just about running. You have to manage the heat, the terrain, your kit, nutrition and recovery, all while being completely self‑sufficient. Alongside that, another big part of the event is sharing the experience with the people around you. The camaraderie in camp and out on the course becomes a natural part of getting through it. It was a really wonderful and very special adventure, and I feel incredibly privileged to have been able to take part.”

Patrick undertook the challenge in support of Kids on Track, a charity based in Andover that provides activity camps, mentoring and support for young people who may not otherwise have access to these opportunities. The charity holds a personal connection for Patrick, whose children attended school with the founders’ family.
Supporting local communities and causes is an important part of Stannah’s values as a family business. The Stannah family has a long history of backing charities and initiatives that make a meaningful difference in people’s lives, particularly those supporting young people, inclusion and opportunity.
