A community garden in Andover has won first place in this year’s In Bloom awards, organised by the Sovereign Network Group (SNG).

Poppy Community Garden, located in Livia Close on Augusta Park, came top in the Thriving Community Garden category, with judges praising its visual appeal, environmental benefits, and community impact.
The award recognises spaces that bring people together, improve local areas, and promote sustainability.
SNG customer and Poppy Community Gardener Michael Parker said:
“It’s always great to see members of the community coming together and supporting the garden. I’m always happy to see the friendships that are created when people from all different backgrounds and walks of life come together to share their knowledge and work collectively.
“It really is the best of our community and that’s the driving force that keeps us doing what we do here at Poppy Community Garden.”
Michael and the team who maintain the garden received £200 in vouchers and a trophy in recognition of their efforts. Their entry was one of 139 submissions from across Southern England, representing more than 85,000 households.

SNG’s In Bloom competition celebrates residents who enhance their surroundings through gardening, with awards across four categories covering indoor, outdoor, and community spaces.
Matt Buckham, In Bloom judge and Managing Director at SNG’s Community Foundation, said:
“It was really difficult to choose this year, but it’s been a pleasure judging some brilliant gardens and green spaces. While we aim to provide good quality places to live, it’s our customers who turn them into real homes to thrive in by adding colour, beauty and life.”
Maria Vasquez, fellow judge and a 2024 winner, added:
“I was blown away by the creativity and dedication shown by participants. What touched me most was how a shared love of plants brought people across the community together. Sharing these stories will hopefully inspire more residents to get involved.”
