Thruxton Circuit was bursting with energy and excitement this past weekend as it hosted the debut of Thruxton Retro presents Superfunk — a unique three-day festival combining classic motorsport action with live music and family-friendly entertainment.

Running from Friday 20 to Sunday 22 June, the event marked a new chapter for the iconic Hampshire track, blending the roar of engines with the rhythm of disco and pop.

Fronted by headline act Björn Again on Saturday night and supported by the lively Earth Wind for Hire, the festival stage lit up with a vibrant mix of local and tribute talent. Among those performing were homegrown favourites Marc Burford, MJ Ponting, Paul Jude Wilson, The Showponies, and Weird Science. Fans of country had their moment too with Jo Alexandr’s Dolly Parton tribute in the toe-tapping ‘9 to 5 Show’, complete with line dancing and crowd participation.

Andover Radio & Love Andover proudly partnered as official media sponsors, with presenter Ben Tuffin on the mic all weekend hosting stage content, games, and competitions. Visitors dressed to impress for fancy dress contests, took part in “guess that tune” challenges, and danced their way to winning prizes including BSB Superbike tickets, karting experiences and exclusive merchandise.

Speaking after the event, Ben Tuffin said:

“It was an unbelievable weekend – the vibe, the music, the smiles – it was everything a community event should be. Seeing families and motorsport fans all mixing together, dancing and laughing, it felt really special. We can’t wait to do it all again.”

Motorsport purists weren’t left out. The on-track schedule celebrated the golden era of racing with packed races, F1 demos, and parade laps featuring classic cars and vintage motorcycles. Local racer Jonathon Chandler proudly took part in the Adrian Flux MG Owners Club championship, representing the region in style.

Children had their own slice of the action in the Kids Paddock, where Big Top Mania brought circus workshops, wild inflatables, and interactive performances. Local funfair favourites returned alongside activities like ‘paint a van’, keeping little ones fully entertained.

For adults, local flavour was served up with craft beers from Rude Giant Brewery – including a limited-edition Thruxton IPA – as well as hog roasts and artisan stalls offering food and drink throughout the weekend.

Festivalgoers also got a first taste of Thruxton’s exciting new direction under owner Alex Thistlethwayte, who took over the venue in May 2024.

He commented:

“Thruxton is a magical place and we’re just getting started. Superfunk is all about fun, and that’s the future we see for this circuit – a place for mates, motors and memories.”

Ben Norton from BARC (British Automobile Racing Club), which runs operations at Thruxton, added:

“I wanted to thank you [Andover Radio] for doing an amazing job throughout the event. You helped bring it to life!”

The success of Superfunk marks a promising start for what is hoped to become a regular fixture in Thruxton’s calendar – one that blends speed, sound and smiles in equal measure.
