VE Day in Andover for Families

On Friday 8th May 2020 the country will come together to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the end of world war 2.

Sadly all the great events that had been planned to celebrate VE day has now been cancelled due to the coronvirus lockdown.

However there are still some ways in which we can still celebrate at home with our children.

Listen to Andover Radio

Join Andover Radio from 1PM Friday as we take you back to 1945, playing the music and the news of the time, plus at 3pm, relive the amazing speech given by Winston Churchill which signified the ending of hostilities.

This amazing soundtrack has been put together with the help of Martin Miller and Phil Farlow, using audio archives to encapsulate the mood of the nation 75 years ago.

Join us for our on air celebration of V E day, Friday May the 8th at 1 PM on 95.9 FM Andover Radio. You can read more here

VE75 challenge from Andover Veterans

Veterans In Action had planned to use their vehicles to undertake an overland trip driving from the UK to Berlin and back to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the end of World War 2.

Due to the current situation they obviously had to cancel that event, instead they are going to collect donated food from 75 homes in Andover, Hants which will then be delivered to 75 homes of those in need.

CHALLENGE 75 is all about WHAT CAN YOU DO 75 of and make a donation or get sponsored by friends with the theme being 75.

You can donate via Billys Just Giving page here

Celebrate at Home

A social media campaign has called for residents across the country to decorate their homes in red, white and blue to mark VE Day with stay at home ‘street parties’.

Families in the same household are also being called on to have picnics or buffets to mark the occasion, in their gardens or homes.

The English Heritage website has a VE Day pack, where you’ll find everything you need to mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day in your own home. The pack includes a selection of tasty recipes, tips for dancing Lindy Hop style, a Spotify playlist and popular 1940s songs to sing with your family. Click here to download

“We’re saying to the public stop what you’re doing at 3pm on Friday 8 May, raise a glass, and undertake a toast to the heroes of WWII.”
