Welcome Back Mel! Former Intern Returns to Hawk Conservancy Trust as Bird Team Member

The Hawk Conservancy Trust near Andover has welcomed back a familiar face – and she’s already ruffling feathers in all the right ways.

Mel, who many may remember from her time as a Conservation and Research Intern in 2023, has returned to the Trust this spring as the newest member of the Bird Team. With a strong passion for wildlife and an impressive background in animal care and conservation, Mel’s journey has come full circle – and the team couldn’t be more delighted.

Mel said:

“I’m thrilled to return to the Trust and bring everything I’ve learned back with me. I’m excited to be part of the team once again, and I’m looking forward to continuing my journey in conservation.”

Mel first connected with the Trust while studying Zoology at Royal Holloway University. A module on animal physiology sparked her interest in the Trust’s research on the powerful kick of the Secretary Bird, which led her to volunteer and later intern at the centre. That experience ignited a lifelong passion for birds of prey.

Since then, she’s gone on to study an MSc in Global Wildlife Health and Conservation in Bristol, gaining hands-on experience in zoos, veterinary practices, and wildlife rehabilitation. She also returned to the Trust for her research project, studying parasite loads in Barn Owl and Kestrel chicks alongside British Projects Manager Dr Matt Stevens.

Before rejoining the Trust, Mel worked as a falconer and keeper at a family-run zoo, honing her animal care skills with over 60 birds of prey and a whole host of other creatures – including raccoons, armadillos and even a Binturong.

Now based back at the Hawk Conservancy Trust, Mel brings with her a wealth of experience and a genuine love for conservation. Visitors to the Trust are encouraged to say hello on their next visit – and perhaps a well-deserved “welcome back!”
