“Why not now?” — Andover estate agent Dion McArthur launches his own business

A familiar face in the Andover property scene has taken an exciting step, launching his own business under the banner of Avocado Property.

We sat down with Dion McArthur, who many will recognise from his years working in the local market, to talk about why now was the right time to go it alone — and what he plans to do differently.

Having built up strong experience across Andover, Dion explained that the move was driven by a desire to raise standards and deliver a more personal service.

“I think there comes a point where you either keep doing things the same way… or you back yourself and do it properly,” he said.
“Having worked in the Andover market for years, I knew how I wanted clients to be treated — more communication, more honesty, and a lot less of the ‘we’ll get back to you’ that never comes.”

Rather than following a traditional estate agency model, Dion is focusing on a straightforward, client-first approach — something he believes is often missing.

“Very simple — I treat people how I’d want to be treated if I was moving house,” he explained.
“That means no jargon, no chasing me for updates, and no sugar-coating things just to win business.”

One of the key differences with Avocado Property is that clients deal with one person from start to finish — something Dion says makes a huge impact.

“Clients deal with one person throughout — not a different voice every time they call. That alone makes a huge difference,” he said.
“It’s modern estate agency, but without losing the personal touch.”

With deep local knowledge, Dion believes understanding the area is just as important as marketing a property well.

“Knowing the different parts of Andover, the schools, the little things you don’t see on Rightmove — that’s what buyers really value,” he added.

Of course, starting a business comes with its challenges, and Dion was refreshingly honest about the realities of stepping away from a salaried role.

“When you go from a monthly salary to ‘you get paid when deals complete’… it sharpens the mind very quickly,” he said.
“But that’s also what makes it exciting. Every instruction, every sale, every completion — it all means that bit more.”

For those thinking about moving, Dion offered some clear advice — particularly for sellers choosing an agent.

“Don’t just pick the agent with the highest valuation or the lowest fee — that’s a classic mistake,” he warned.
“Look at how they’re actually going to market your property and whether you trust them to handle things when it gets tricky.”

Looking ahead, Dion has a clear goal in mind — to become a trusted name across the town.

“I want to become the go-to name in Andover — simple as that,” he said.
“If I can build a business based on trust, recommendations, and actually making the moving process feel a bit less painful for people… that’s success for me.”
