Pupils from Rookwood School were joined by Cllr Ian Jeffrey, Mayor of Test Valley Borough Council, and the Mayoress, Maura Jeffrey, on Friday 4th April as they celebrated achievements in the Youth Speaks District Final. The Mayor and Mayoress visited the school to present certificates to the winners and participants of both the Youth Speaks and Young Writer competitions.

Held at The Mountbatten School in Romsey, the event brought together schools from across the region for a series of passionate and well-argued debates. Rookwood’s intermediate team took the top prize with a spirited performance on the motion, “Let’s Stop the Americanisation of British Culture.” Led by Mrs Heather Blackmore, Head of Drama, the team – Annabelle N (Chairperson), Alex L (Proposer), and Jessica M (Opposer) – impressed the judges with their clarity, humour and delivery, earning both laughs and applause from the audience.

The senior team also performed strongly, debating “We Must Fight for the Right to Free Speech.” Dariia B, John K, and Oliver W represented Rookwood with poise and passion, going head-to-head with schools discussing topics including abortion rights, electric vehicles, and the beauty industry. Although narrowly beaten by Bay House School from Gosport, the team earned praise for their eloquence and composure in what was described as a very close contest.

Mrs Cumpsty, Head of English at Rookwood School, said:

“Public speaking is an invaluable skill, and it was wonderful to see our students rise to the challenge with such confidence and flair. Their ability to engage an audience, structure persuasive arguments, and think on their feet was truly impressive. We are incredibly proud of them.”

Special thanks were given to Year 13 student Elysia B for supporting the teams throughout their preparations, even sacrificing her Mother’s Day Sunday to help them rehearse. The school also extended its gratitude to the families who provided their support and encouragement along the way.

Rookwood School continues to champion public speaking as part of its wider commitment to developing communication and leadership skills in young people.
