The Commonwealth Flag will be raised in both Andover and Romsey next week, joining over 1,000 flags being flown across the world for Commonwealth Day.
On Monday, 12 March, the Mayor of Test Valley, Councillor Carl Borg-Neal, will read the Commonwealth Affirmation at 9.50am prior to the flag being raised at 10:00am when approximately 500 Commonwealth flags will be raised simultaneously throughout the UK.
Following the flag raising, a Single Commemorative Act Ceremony will take place at 10.30am in the Upper Guildhall. This ceremony will mark the centenary of World War One and will be based on the feeling of darkness that came over Europe 100 years ago.
Deputy Mayor of Test Valley, Councillor Ian Carr, will carry out the same service at Crosfield Hall, Romsey.
The Fly a Flag for the Commonwealth initiative, now in its fourth year, is a collective public expression of commitment to the Commonwealth, enabling participants to show appreciation for the values the Commonwealth upholds, and the opportunities offered for friendship and cooperation with fellow Commonwealth young and old citizens around the world.
This year’s theme explores how the Commonwealth can address global challenges and work to create a better future for all citizens through sub-themes of sustainability, safety, prosperity and fairness, in line with the theme of the 2018 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in London.
