Cup Tie Ends Early Following Serious Injury at Foxcotte Park

Match Report By Kelly Wilson

The Russell Cotes Cup fixture between Andover New Street and Whitchurch United on Tuesday 30th September was abandoned in the 82nd minute after a serious injury to a Whitchurch player.

Up until that point, the match had been a lively contest, with Andover New Street displaying strength in both attack and defence, while Whitchurch worked hard to test the hosts’ back line.

The deadlock was broken midway through the first half when New Street were awarded a penalty. Although the Whitchurch goalkeeper produced an excellent save, Malachi Dotse reacted quickest to tuck away the rebound and give the hosts a 1–0 lead.

New Street almost doubled their advantage soon after, as Ben Ashfield’s superbly struck free kick rattled the post, much to the relief of the visitors.

The second half began with a turning point in Andover’s favour when the Whitchurch captain was shown a straight red card, leaving the away side with ten men. From the ensuing pressure, Dotse struck again, this time from a free kick, his effort powering through the defensive wall to make it 2–0.

Moments later, substitute Claudio Herbert made an immediate impact, collecting a loose ball and firing home a clean half-volley with his left foot to extend the lead to 3–0.

However, the match was abruptly halted with less than ten minutes remaining, as a serious injury to a Whitchurch player prompted swift and respectful reactions from both sets of players and staff. Referee Phil Stayte abandoned the contest in the 82nd minute, with the scoreline at 3–0 to New Street.

While the hosts had looked set to progress, the result was overshadowed by concern for the injured player. Both clubs displayed professionalism, unity and respect in handling the difficult situation.

Andover New Street FC have extended their best wishes to the Whitchurch United player for a full and speedy recovery.
