More people than ever are taking part in sport across Test Valley, thanks to the work of local clubs, volunteers, coaches and community organisations who create opportunities for residents of all ages to get active every week.
Since 2020, the number of pitch sport teams across the borough has increased by 232, bringing the total to 582 teams. Growth has been seen across football, cricket, hockey and rugby, reflecting the important role community sport continues to play in local life.
To help ensure facilities can support this growing demand, Test Valley Borough Council has developed two new strategies with the people who know local sport best. Through the 2026 Playing Pitch Strategy and Sports Facilities Strategy, a shared vision has been set out for the next five years, helping to protect and improve pitches, facilities and opportunities for participation across the borough.
The strategies have been shaped through more than a year of engagement with local sports clubs, leagues, schools, governing bodies, parish and town councils and community organisations. Their knowledge, experience and understanding of local needs have played a central role in identifying their priorities for the future.
The strategies provide a roadmap for supporting existing clubs, planning for future demand, and helping partners work together to improve sports provision as communities grow. They will also help guide investment, support planning decisions and secure improvements to facilities across the borough.
Councillor Terese Swain, Portfolio Holder for Community, Leisure and Tourism, said: “Being active is about much more than competitive sport. It helps people stay healthy, build friendships, gain confidence and feel connected to their community.
“These strategies have been shaped by the people and organisations who provide opportunities for local residents every day. Their insight and experience have been invaluable in helping us understand what communities need now and in the future.
“As participation continues to grow, the strategies give us a shared plan to protect and improve facilities and ensure more people can enjoy the benefits of being active.”
Leader of Test Valley Borough Council, Councillor Phil North, said: “The growth in participation across Test Valley is something to celebrate. Behind every team are volunteers, coaches, club officials and community organisations who give their time to create opportunities for others.
“Week after week, they help people get active, develop new skills, build friendships and strengthen community life across the borough.
“These strategies reflect their contribution and provide a roadmap for ensuring local facilities continue to support sport and physical activity for years to come.”
The strategies will help support ongoing collaboration between clubs, governing bodies, community organisations, Sport England and local partners, ensuring that sport and physical activity can continue to thrive across Test Valley.
Together, they provide a long-term framework for protecting existing facilities, responding to growing demand and helping future generations enjoy access to quality places to play sport, be active and connect with their communities.
