Man, 44, jailed for shoplifting in Overton

A man has been jailed for 29 weeks after he stole meat worth more than £600 from a shop in Overton.

John Wagstaff, 44, of Sunnymead, Oakley, stole meat worth £633 from Co-op on Winchester Street on five sperate occasions in July, August and September.

He also breached a criminal behaviour order which was imposed in March this year.

Wagstaff was arrested and charged with five counts of theft from a shop and five counts of breaching a criminal behaviour order.

He pleaded guilty to all offences at Basingstoke Magistrates Court on 24 September and was jailed for a total of 29 weeks.

PC Ross Holdsworth, from the Basingstoke Rural Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “I want to be clear – shoplifting will not be tolerated in the Basingstoke area.

“John Wagstaff’s actions have had a huge impact on businesses, staff and the wider community. His behaviour was unacceptable and he was found to be in breach of a CBO and was swiftly arrested, charged and put before the courts.

“I hope this result reassures the public that we will do all we can to ensure that offenders face the consequences of their actions.”
