Sweeney narrows the gap for New Street

Andover New Street FC Flag

Both Andover Clubs were at home in the Wessex League last night and experienced slightly differing fortunes as the season draws to a close

With an hour gone Andover Town found themselves three nil down to Team Solent having been very much outplayed and conceded a couple of preventable goals.

A Joe Wright penalty reduced the deficit and defender Luke Dempsey pulled back a second goal only for Mike Gosney to miss a second penalty. Zach Glasspool grabbed the equaliser three minutes from time to give his side a point that had looked very unlikely earlier in the evening

A mile up the road at Foxcotte Park the top two in Division One met with a Callum Sweeney goal on the hour giving New Street the points against League leaders Christchurch, the visitors’s first defeat since November.

This narrowed the gap between the two Clubs to five points with the Andover side having a game in hand.

With Blackfield and Langley winning at Portland last night Town’s lead is down to five points but one more point will be enough to guarantee them promotion if, as expected , two Clubs go up to the Southern League.

New Street are at home to bottom Club Follands on Thursday evening before going to Verwood on Saturday whjile Town have their last home match in the League when Fareham are the visitors at the weekend.
