Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service is highlighting the risks associated with household appliances during Electrical Fire Safety Week after data revealed that 40 accidental electrical fires involving white goods occurred in the region last year.
Common appliances like tumble dryers, washing machines, and dishwashers were linked to nearly one fire per week across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight in 2023. While this marks a 25% decrease from the previous year, with fires dropping from 54 in 2022/23 to 40 in 2023/24, fire officials are urging residents to remain vigilant.
A Hampshire Family’s Devastating Experience
For Mandy Ebury, a mother of five from Basingstoke, the dangers of white goods fires became a harsh reality when her tumble dryer caught fire just weeks before Christmas. Mandy recalled the terrifying experience, saying:
“I walked into the hallway and was met by thick black smoke coming from behind the tumble dryer. I screamed for the kids to get out of the house. My daughter Lola helped get my autistic son out safely along with our dogs. We stood in the rain, watching as our home burned.”
The fire left Mandy’s family homeless and facing a difficult start to the new year in temporary accommodation. She described the emotional toll of losing their home and the lasting impact it’s had on their mental health.
Safety Warnings and Advice
Jamie Cousins, Station Manager at Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service, stressed the importance of using electrical appliances safely:
“Electrical fires present a real risk, often causing significant damage and, in some cases, leading to tragic consequences. It’s crucial to use appliances correctly, avoid overloading sockets, and ensure wiring is regularly checked.”
Electrical Safety First recommends households take simple steps to reduce fire risks:
- Clean lint filters on tumble dryers regularly.
- Register appliances with manufacturers to stay informed about recalls.
- Check for damaged cables and avoid using overloaded extension leads.
- Avoid running appliances overnight, when fire detection may be delayed.
- Ensure working smoke alarms are installed on every floor of your home.
The Financial Impact of Appliance Fires
New figures from Admiral Insurance Group reveal the average insurance claim for fires caused by white goods is £36,870. The highest single claim in the last three years reached nearly £290,000.
More than half of these claims (51%) were due to tumble dryer fires, while 24% involved dishwashers.
Stay Safe and Informed
While fires linked to white goods have decreased, the risks remain significant. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service encourages all residents to review their home safety measures and ensure appliances are used and maintained correctly.
