E-Scooter Taken Off Andover Streets After Public Order Arrest

On Thursday afternoon (4 September), just after 2pm, two officers from the Violent Crime Taskforce stopped a 19-year-old man at the Chantry Centre on Chantry Street. The man became aggressive after the e-scooter was seized, shouting and swearing at officers.

As a result, he was arrested on suspicion of a public order offence. He later received a community resolution, a type of out-of-court disposal.

Community resolutions are used by police to deal with lower-level offences in a proportionate way. They don’t result in a criminal record but can include actions such as an apology, paying for any damage, or other steps to make amends.

The seized e-scooter will now be crushed.

Police are reminding the public that:

  • E-scooters remain illegal to use on public roads, pavements, cycle paths and town centres unless part of an authorised rental scheme
  • Community resolutions are typically used for low-level offences where the offender admits responsibility and may involve actions such as an apology or reparation
  • Anyone who sees e-scooters being used illegally should call 101, or 999 in an emergency, quoting Operation Traverse

The force has said tackling the illegal use of e-scooters is part of their ongoing commitment to keeping Andover’s streets safe this summer.
