After five fantastic years at Waterloo Court, the Alex McGarry Art Gallery is set to embark on an exciting new journey.
Alex McGarry, the gallery’s renowned artist, reflects on her time at this beloved location with fondness and gratitude. “The past five years have been incredible, filled with wonderful memories,” she shares. “From hosting family exhibitions and seeing my name on AA road signs around town to the daily visits from familiar faces and their dogs—many of whom I’ve painted—it’s the people and their support that I cherish the most.”
Artistic Evolution at Waterloo Court
Waterloo Court has been a significant chapter in Alex’s artistic career, where she experienced constant growth and evolution. “My time here has been invaluable,” she explains. “The feedback from the public has often influenced my work, like the surge in popularity of garden birds post-lockdown. These interactions have helped shape my artistic journey.”
A Thoughtful Decision to Move
With the lease ending and construction work for The Lights Theatre set to begin opposite the gallery, Alex made the thoughtful decision not to renew. “While the Andover Masterplan will be fantastic for the town, the construction work right across from the gallery would have posed challenges,” she says. “Dust and noise would disrupt my painting process, especially since I use the front window as my studio.”
A Fond Farewell on 13th July
To mark the final day at Waterloo Court, Alex invites everyone to join her for a special farewell event on 13th July. “Whether you’re a regular customer or a first-time visitor, we’d love to welcome you,” she enthuses. “We’ll have a glass of fizz ready and a heartfelt thank you for everyone who has supported us over the years.”
Exciting Future Plans
Looking ahead, Alex has an exciting year planned. “2024 is shaping up to be a milestone year,” she reveals. “I have a solo exhibition aboard P&O’s Arcadia in June, followed by a live painting demonstration at the Hawk Conservancy Trust with Chris Packham and Megan McCubbin. Later in the year, I’ll celebrate my one-year anniversary as the official Artist in Residence at the Hawk Conservancy Trust with a special exhibition.”

Fans of Alex’s work can continue to enjoy her paintings online and in person. Her website and social media channels will feature regular updates and new artworks. “You can visit my website or find me on social media to stay connected,” Alex advises. “My paintings will also be available at the Hawk Conservancy Trust gift shop and Clarendon Galleries nationwide.”
A Return to the Town Centre?
Alex remains optimistic about returning to the town centre once the new theatre is completed. “I love being part of the town and interacting with people every day. Hopefully, I’ll find a new spot in the town centre once the theatre is up and running.”
Engaging Digitally
Alex plans to enhance her online presence to stay connected with her audience. “I’ll be updating Facebook and Instagram more frequently with my latest paintings and keeping my website current with event dates and new works.”
Upcoming Events and Evolving Art
Among the upcoming events, Alex is particularly excited about celebrating her one-year anniversary at the Hawk Conservancy Trust on 5th December. Reflecting on her artistic journey, she notes, “I initially avoided painting wildlife because my dad, Pip McGarry, already did that. But over the years, I found my passion in painting British wildlife and birds. Their expressions, character, and diversity inspire me.”
