The DH Property Services Stadium hosted New Street’s first Velocity Wessex Premier Division game of the season with a 2-0 victory on Tuesday 4th August.
Goals came from Zach Hine and Greg Peel in the second half of the game keeping the Green’s at the top of the table going into this weekend’s FA Cup fixture.
The first 15 minutes of the game was scrappy from both ends as the Bash and Street both wanted to be the team to break the deadlock.
As the game begun to settle Andover found themselves being able to press more into Bashley’s defence however they were unable to produce anything in the box.
Street had a spell of set pieces that looked positive with the opportunity to score but players were caught offside.
Ollie Erdinc attempted to help out the home side’s forwards as he made a great run, but the cross went over the goal.
Bashley began to show frustration in their play, becoming more vocal when instructing their teammates.
Half time arrived with good football being played but no one able to find the net.
The second half kicked off with both teams passionate to be the first team to score.
Only ten minutes after kick off Erdinc was able to make clean passes between himself and Peel to be able to see Hine who took the shot and put the ball in the back bottom corner.
Bashley made substitutions in quick reaction to hopefully boost their opportunity to equalise.
The subs definitely had an effect on the game as Street’s defence were being held tight near the box with the Green’s goalkeeper Cairney making game-deciding saves.
New Street begin their final push after surviving Bash’s threat which led to a free kick on the right had side just outside Bashley’s box.
Jake Rawkins stepped up and made the cross to Peel who eyes up his options but ultimately shoots slamming the ball into the back of the net.
The stadium celebrates alongside the team as they believe the game to be over.
After four minutes of extra time the whistle was blown, and the game was done.
The fans celebrated in triumph as they remain at the top of the league table going into this weekend’s cup fixture against Christchurch at home.
Captain of New Street George Bennett commented after the match: “I thought we were really good, that’s the best we have been with both preseason and the start of the season.
“I said to the boys at halftime you’ve just got to keep doing it, keep believing and we’ll get our chance, and I think we deserved to win.
