One hundred years after fighting ceased, the heritage of our local communities and our own family histories still connect us to the First World War.
These are some events and celebrations that are taking place in Andover to mark this special occasion.
The 215 project
In November 2018 Andover Town Council will be supporting a large scale Community Art project to commemorate the centenary of the end of World War One.On the 10th November 2018 these figures will be gathered at Vigo Road Recreation Ground, and will be the centerpiece of a emotional installation art piece. Garden of Remembrance in Andover
Test Valley Borough Council has installed three There But Not There Tommy silhouettes, which form part of a nationwide installation for the fallen. One can be found in Andover at the garden of rememberance, the others are in Romsey and stockbridge. You can read more here.
Andover library
Take part in a Hampshire-wide poppy display at libraries to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War, inspired by the iconic Tower of London poppies. Paint, knit, fold or sew your own poppy and bring it into the library from Saturday 13 October before the anniversary on Sunday 11 November. The poppies will be incorporated in library poppy displays. Visitors will be encouraged to donate to the British Legion’s annual Poppy Appeal.
Andover museum
Hope, Peace and Remembrance exhibition.
A community art installation to commemorate the centenary of the end of World War 1. You can go visit the museum and add your own Dove, leave a thought, a wish, a drawing or a poem to add to the tree of Peace.
Andover, a Wyevale Garden Centre
Their next Learning to Grow event is a bit of a special one. To mark Armistice Day they will be planting red tulip bulbs to raise awareness for The Royal British Legion. Bring your Little Diggers down and join them on Sunday 4th November 2018. 10:30am or 11:15am
St Mary Bourne’s Contribution To World War One
November 12 @ 10:00 am – November 17 @ 5:00 pm
There are 220 names on our Roll of Honour, just a surname and an initial, of whom 37 were killed in action. For 100 years we have remembered the dead, now the St Mary Bourne History Group want to identify those who returned alive and follow them to the grave. In partnership with the Imperial War Museum (now IWM), this multimedia exhibition of podcasts, music, posters, poetry readings and power point presentations unites the war at a national level with the war’s impact on a small Hampshire village. Our hours are 10-12 and 2-5 from Monday 12 November – Saturday 17 November.
Remembrance Sunday Parade in Andover
11th November 2018
The parade starts about 1000 in Bridge street, and finishes up at St Mary’s Church. There will be a parade from St Marys Church to the cenotaph starting at 1045 ready for the two minutes’ silence at 1100.
Don’t forget to donate by buying a poppy as well, they will be sold at most schools, local shops as well as from the people stood in town with the Poppy trays.
