LET’S TALK SUNSCREEN

Daisy First Aid Andover have shared with us some very important information on how we can keep our children safe in the sun.

The weather is set to get up to the high 20’s this week, and we are all making the most of our gardens and being able to get outside a little more.

So which sunscreen should you go for?

For children look for SPF 30 or higher and UVA five ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (normally found one the back is the bottle) .
Reapply every couple of hours and after swimming and towel drying.

Sunscreen is generally not recommended for babies under 6 months – keep them in the shade and well hydrated

Encourage your child to play in the shade – for example, under trees – especially between 11am and 3pm, when the sun is at its strongest. (Protection is still needed) Or take some time out of the sun at these times.

Cover your child up in loose cotton clothes, such as an oversized T-shirt with sleeves.

Get your child to wear a floppy hat with a wide brim that shades their face, ears and neck.

Protect your child’s eyes with sunglasses that meet the British Standard (BSEN 1836:2005) and carry the CE mark – check the label.

Don’t forget areas such as the face, ears, feet and backs of hands .

Top tip! ⭐️The more expensive brands don’t always offer the most protection!⭐️

So here’s the science bit. Sunlight is made up of both UVA and UVB rays. The SPF factor relates to protection from UVB – these rays are associated with sunburn. UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin and can cause skin aging. So look for a sunscreen that protects against both
