Subbuteo is making a comeback!

Twelve passionate players got together on Sunday for an Open Day at Andover Subbuteo Club on Colebrook Way

The players came from far and wide, Nottingham , Chesterfield, Portsmouth, Selsey, Southampton, Basingstoke and Andover.

A highlight of the day was a visit from International Subbuteo legend Colin Vickers. Colin gave up playing professionally in 1994 but before that he played as Captain of the England Subbuteo team 32 times in the International League. He has  played in Switzerland and Germany among other countries in his long Subbuteo career which started when he was 14. He has also been the organiser of the National League and the Treasurer of ETSF ( European Table Soccer Federation) in the past.

Two players travelled from Nottingham and Chesterfield and made the 3 hour trip down to see the Club and have a chat with other players. They are both still League players back home. Andy from Nottingham started playing as a child and he went on to organise 6 player international tours and organise the International Solo League which has 80 players from 18 different countries.

Malcolm who travelled up from Portsmouth for the Open Day also  starting playing as a child of 7 and played into his teens before giving it up for a good few years but has taken up the game again 6 months ago.

Chris Burford who founded the Club last September was extremely pleased with the turnout but would like more local people to come along. Chris said “This has been a great turnout and looking forward to future events. It doesn’t matter if you haven’t played Subbuteo before or if you would like to get back into the game after a break just pop up to the club and have a friendly game

There are five full sized tables with different surfaces to play on, a training area for newcomers to the game or those who want to practice their moves or you don’t have to play at all. Contact Chris on 07956 361149 or you can visit the Facebook group.
