24-hour bike ride for John Hanson staff and students

On Thursday 30th September 2021, at 3pm, John Hanson staff will be competing against students in a 24-hour virtual bike ride challenge to raise money for specialist equipment for a new independent living course at Andover college.

The hope is that the team will raise £10,000 to support the new course at Andover College which has been set up to help those with complex learning needs to access vital skill based course at college in September.

It will be made up of 4 teams of John Hanson staff and students consisting of 3 members each (1 male staff team, 1 female staff team, 1 male student team and 1 female student team) will be taking part in a 24-hour bike ride to raise money for “Jazzie’s Journey”.

Jasmine is 18 years old and has attended Icknield special needs school in Andover for all of her school life. Jasmine has Retts syndrome (neurological disorder) and the mentality of a 3-year-old. She also has various other physical disabilities and needs constant 1:1 care. She is a very happy girl and ready to take the next stage of her journey through leaving school and accessing a college.

For our young people at John Hanson Community School, this is a right of passage and the options for them are vast. This is not the case for Jasmine and her friends. In September, Jasmine and her 9 friends hope to be starting a new, much needed, special needs course at Andover College. Our students have set themselves the target of raising of £10,000 to help provide the specialist equipment needed to support this independent living course.”

The teams will set off virtually from John Hanson to Minehead, before riding a loop of the South West, reaching milestones of Jazzie’s favourite holiday destinations such as Croyde Bay, Polzeath and St Ives.

Soon to be year 11 Student, George said “We have already started our early morning training to make sure we are ready”. Lucy another student taking part in the challenge said that they are really hoping to raise £10,000 so Jasmine and her friends will “Enjoy college as much as we will” so went on to say “Please help by donating to our just giving page- Jazzies journey”
