People from all walks of life spilled out of the confines of St Mary’s Church in Andover in honour of our fallen.
At 11am, following the exhortation “We will remember them”, the chimes of the town’s church rang out the moment the guns fell silent, exactly 100 years earlier.
With perfect timing, the gathered crowd of serving military personnel, veterans and civilians stood in respectful silence, as flags were dipped in honour of our lost heroes and the last post was played by a solitary bugler.
Two Apache helicopters performed a flypast just after 11am.
Wreath laying was performed by the Deputy Lieutenant of Hampshire, the Mayor of Test Valley, MP Kit Malthouse and representatives from the Royal British Legion and the Freemen of the Borough of Test Valley.
Children from local schools also laid poppies at the base of the war memorial.
Today’s Remembrance Day service follows a hugely emotional evening at Vigo Park last night. The 215 Project had hundreds of visitors throughout the evening to see 215 decorated MDF figures of soldiers, the number of the fallen as written on the Andover war memorial.
The two-hour long art installation was accompanied by mood lighting and an emotional soundscape of music, poems, prose and sound effects, created by local radio station 95.9FM Andover Radio.
