Christmas 2019 TV Adverts

John Lewis Christmas Advert 2019

TESCO will release their Christmas TV advert tonight during a programmed called ‘I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here’.

The new John Lewis Christmas advert is on our screens… Andover’s Christmas Lights event was yet another success – proving this little town can do really big things.

And, Christmas windows are starting to adorn our high street. Photos2Print and Mooch have made some superb effort again this year just as more people feel more festive and begin – or continue – with their Christmas shopping.

With just 37 sleeps until the fat man in the red suit gets stuck down your chimney, to save you trawling through the internet, we thought we’d put all 2019’s Christmas TV ads in one handy place for you.

And ask… Which one do you think is the best?

JOHN LEWIS AND WAITROSE:

Together for the first time, John Lewis and Waitrose have a heart-warming tale of a dragon called ‘Excitable Edgar’ and his friend Ava – as Edgar’s accidental fire-breathing almost ruins Christmas.

These Christmas TV ads are now just as festive as mince pies and cinnamon inexplicably appearing in your Costa coffee.

MARKS AND SPENCER:

M&S have two ads this year, one for M&S Food featuring TV personalities Paddy McGuinness and Emma Willis called ‘This is not just food’. There’s also one for their retail arm called ‘Go Jumpers for Christmas’. Nathan Ansell from M&S Marketing says, “We’re backing with confidence our biggest commercial category for Christmas and importantly having some fun with our customers and colleagues. We can’t wait to see the nation Go Jumpers for Christmas.

ASDA:

“Let’s Make Christmas Extra Special”, say ASDA in their 2019 festive commercial. We think this rivals the cuteness of the John Lewis ad, as recently departed Granddad evokes warm thoughts of family at Christmas.

BOOTS:

The Boots advert focuses on the stress finding the perfect gift. Their ‘Bootiques’ campaign hopes it will help you find gifts for people who are difficult to find gifts for, vegans, ‘tweens’ and that ‘on fleek’ family member (no, we don’t know, either).

ALDI:

After they made a few quid merchandising him last year, Kevin the Carrot returns in Aldi’s advert, which features a cleverly written rendition of Robbie Williams’ ‘Let me Entertain You’, as well as the flat cap wearing sprouts called ‘Leafy Blinders’.

SELFRIDGES:

Selfridges might not be a weekly destination for people who live in Andover, but it’s worth mentioning as this futuristic advert features Cambridge Analytica whistleblower Christopher Wiley. The ad takes you to a house party set 1,000 years in the future.

ICELAND:

This must have cost a few quid on the licensing rights alone – well, at least it will have been a lot less this year than it would have been back when Disney’s Frozen was everywhere. This is called the Magic of Frozen.

IKEA:

Time to ‘Silence the Critics’. IKEA has a rap-infused idea about how to improve the look of your home with their 2019 TV advertising campaign.

AMAZON:

Like it or not. Amazon are major players – if not THE player – in Christmas trading. Just before they start delivering your gifts with unmanned drones, take a look at a more heartfelt approach to Christmas as they say, “Everybody Needs Somebody to Love” – accompanied by a chorus of singing Amazon boxes.

WALKERS CRISPS:

We can’t quite work out why Walkers Crisps might want to join the multi-gazillion pound industry of making mega Christmas TV ads. But, starring Mariah Carey (who must have cost a bob or two), it made us giggle at the end.

ARGOS:

There’s something a little… er… “80s”, about Argos. Even though we miss them in the Chantry Centre. However, flicking through the catalogue still remains a really essential way of getting ideas. More useful we think than an hour of trawling through the online pages of our previous the brand. Maybe that’s why Argos have chosen Simple Minds’ 1980s classic track ‘Don’t You Forget About Me’ as their advert’s music.

MCDONALDS:

Andover’s global burger factory get in on the act again this year. Sorry, but this is kinda cute. The star of the McDonald’s Christmas ad is ‘Archie the Reindeer’, a loveable reindeer brought alive by one girl’s imagination.

VISA:

It really is the best time of year to show the High Street some love. Singing along to Queen’s ‘Somebody to Love’ the VISA credit card’s advert is again this year a call for consumers to back independent retailers on the high street. We totally agree. #WhereYouShopMatters

TESCO (launches 17th November 2019):

COCA-COLA:

And some people say, “It’s only really Christmas when Coca-Cola roll out their old ad”.

In the meantime, as the big companies spend millions on letting us know they’re there at Christmas. Let’s not forget about our independent local retailers, those people who are experts in their trade, people you can talk to and whose livelihoods rely on us.

“Advertising is all about ‘share of mind'”, says Andover Radio director David Harber. “Christmas is a tough time to cut though the increased noise from competitors which is why these ads are important. They are not about direct response sales, they are about making sure your brand is seen, trusted and easily recalled – all of which will help future purchase decisions”.
