Harrow Way students ‘Get Inspired’ as part of National Apprenticeship Week 2023

Year 10 Harrow Way students attended a Get Inspired event run by EBP South as part of a series of events in the school to mark National Apprenticeship Week 2023. Students headed over to the Apollo Hotel in Basingstoke to learn about careers in their local area.

Employers and training providers were all at the event which attracted over 800 students from across Basingstoke and Test Valley. From hospitality to local councils, employers laid on numerous ‘have a go’ activities for students to get hands on and sample the many diverse roles employed in the area. From the Science-based where they froze flowers in liquid nitrogen to programming robots and testing a driving simulator. While meeting the many employers and organisations at the event, students also got to learn about the various educational options, training courses and apprenticeships available.

Commenting on the value of attending Get Inspired, Graeme Fluellen, Harrow Way Assistant Headteacher said: “An important part of learning in schools is contextualising lessons so students can see that there are real life applications to what they are being taught. This Get Inspired event takes the process one step further where students literally got hands-on with activities and could see the link between what happens in school and what could happen with their careers. We need students to start joining the dots between their learning and ambition to future study and beyond. It was a great event – very well attended by students and local employers.”

Get Inspired on the 9 February was held in partnership with Lenovo and sponsored by Enterprise M3 and CEC (Careers and Enterprise Company) and supported by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council, with Test Valley Borough Council also sponsoring the event.
