More from Andover’s Christmas Poets

Megan Williams Andover Radio Christmas Lights 2019

Megan Williams from Portway Junior School won Andover Radio’s Christmas Star competition to switch on Friday’s Christmas lights in the High Street.

But the quality of writing by Andover’s young people was so good, local radio station 95.9FM Andover Radio will broadcast more entrants.

9-year old Megan came to Love Andover HQ yesterday (Sunday 10th November) with mum Melanie to record her poem, which will be turned into a video and shown on the BIG TV screen in the High Street before she presses the ‘big button’.

Megan’s poem was chosen from over 150 entries by the team at David Mellor Family Jewellers, this year’s Christmas Lights event sponsor.

Andover Radio had such a large number of entries this year that each of the Andover Radio DJs have chosen their personal favourites . We are pleased to say that on Saturday 16th November we will also be broadcasting poems from:

  • Swai Ponting, Anton Junior School ‘What Christmas Means to Me’
  • Belle Bryant, ‘The Spare Chair’
  • Seren Wallis, Portway Juniors, ‘On Christmas’
  • Katie Drury, Wellington Academy, ‘My Christmas Treat’
  • Summer Dabbs, Portway Juniors, ‘Outside’
  • Chloe Watt, Portway Juniors, ‘Elf on the Shelf’
  • Georgia M, Portway Juniors, ‘Best Time of the Year’

Andover’s Christmas Lights switch on is Friday 15th November in the high street with entertainment starting at 5pm. This year’s hosts are Luke Shearer from popular local band Funkline and Andover Radio’s Luis Wyatt.

Craig Hicks from Andover Radio says, “We are really proud to be able to get young people and local schools as an active part of the Andover Christmas Lights Switch on.

“This annual event really is ‘the greatest show’ – it showcases a wide variety of talent around town. This year, we have been staggered by the huge amount of creative talent shown by Andover’s young people and their writing talent.

“We must thank the staff at The Wellington Academy and Portway Juniors for their huge envelopes of entries this year.”

Andover Radio runs frequent poetry meetings at Love Andover HQ on Andover High Street. Organiser Dan Hooks is always seeking new people to join the growing group.

Dan is also asking people to write poems for the Andover Space Programme. Chapel Arts Studios will be launching a spacecraft into the skies from Andover on Sunday December 1st and are looking for creative people to take part in this cosmic art activity. Read about the Andover Space Programme here.

Andover Radio broadcast poems every day at 11.30am and anybody, regardless of experience, is invited to take part. If this interests you, please email Dan Hooks here.
