New summer primary school lunch menu

Taste tests are great for encouraging children to be more adventurous eaters, and that’s why catering teams at local schools are excited about the new primary school lunch menu being launched by the school meals service HC3S Education Catering next week.

With four key new recipes, the menu has undergone six months of rigorous taste testing by keyworker children still at school through lockdown, plus tasters at schools in March. A new chicken curry recipe was tweaked five times to get it right and children at Portway School in Andover were fully involved in developing the recipe to make it unique with flavours they wanted. The result is a delicious array of cumin, turmeric and coriander in a homemade tomato sauce with a mix of 100% Red Tractor 50% chicken breast and 50% chicken thigh for more flavour. It’s all cooked from scratch.

Based on feedback from the children who enjoyed the spring quiche, the new recipe is packed full of veg for hints of Summer. Vegetable goujons were a hit this year so they asked their supplier, Red House Foods, to develop a burger so they could add 20% more veg to the recipe, to help children eat more vegetables.
