This year saw the final rollout of the three-year implementation of 1 to
9 grade ratings for GCSEs – with 9 being at the very top of the scale
and a pass grade being 4 or above. In Hampshire, secondary schools are
reporting that 69 per cent of pupils taking the exams achieved a pass at
grade 4 in English and mathematics, compared to 67 per cent last year.
The ‘attainment 8’ outcome, which measures the results across the wider
curriculum, has also improved from a score of 47.2 in 2018 to 47.6 in
2019.
In congratulating Hampshire’s students, Councillor Roz Chadd, Executive
Member for Education and Skills, at Hampshire County Council, said:
“This is a huge achievement. There is no question that the new GCSE
examinations are tougher than ever, yet Hampshire’s pupils have risen to
the challenge again and performed excellently. They should be very
proud of their results for 2019, as should their families and schools.
Hampshire schools performed very well last year so to improve from that
strong position is a real achievement for them.”
Cllr Chadd added: “As a whole this group of 16-year olds stand in good
stead to move on to learning for A-levels or other technical and
vocational qualifications. The range of options for learning after
secondary education is wide, offering more choice and making it easier
for young people to take the next positive step on their journey to a
future career and full-time employment.
“Those who are drawn to academic study can pursue college courses and
may even look forward to higher education, but we now also have plenty
of alternatives in Hampshire to study for technical and vocational
qualifications, including undertaking an apprenticeship. As a major
employer, the County Council itself takes on around 100 apprentices and
trainees each year, providing a variety of roles from office work to
social care and construction.
“If any student receiving their results is now unsure of their next
step, I would urge them to call Hampshire Futures on 01962 846193 or
email careers.service@hants.gov.uk for advice.”
