Local bike rides to enjoy in Andover

Written by Graeme Davis

Struggling with lockdown blues?

Then get out on your bike. Andover is surrounded by beautiful countryside. A breath of fresh air will be good for you physically and mentally.

For an easy route beginning in the town centre, cycle along the river path next to Iceland, behind Asda, continuing onwards to reach Rooksbury Mill Reserve. At this point you can choose to follow the Watervole Trail by Watermills Park to Rooksbury, or continue to the main Reserve entrance. Climb up Rooksbury Road, crossing Salisbury Road. Cycle through Floral Way, then up and across Weyhill Road to enter The Drove. An underpass takes you to Charlton Lakes. The cycle path here leads onto Anton Lakes Reserves, then follow Shepherds Spring Lane to return to town.

For a more challenging route, try cycling from Andover to Stockbridge! The Spratt and Winkle cycle path can be joined next to The Mayfly Pub in Chibolton. Alternatively, take the back route through the Clatfords using the Longstock Road, enjoying the village vistas. You could join these two routes to make a circular ride.

Stockbridge Down

Another scenic route is from Andover to Whitchurch. Although the Andover end of the Walworth Road is busy, it gets quieter past the estate and will take you all the way there. Enjoy the fantastic views of St Mary Bourne Viaduct, and follow the Harroway and Bloswood Lane into the village. Pause here to appreciate the Whitchurch Silk Mill built in 1813 before returning.

There are many other worthy destinations including Weyhill Fair, Danebury Hill Fort, Grateley and the Wallops.

So study a map, grab your water bottle and don your helmet: you’re spoilt for choice in Andover!
