Airwave Anniversary: Purple Oak Support Took the Reins at Andover Radio To Celebrate 60 Years

On Thursday, April 11th, the atmosphere at The Wellington Centre was electric as Purple Oak Support commemorated its 60th anniversary in a manner that delighted both staff and service users alike.

Andover Radio, known for its vibrant community engagement, lent its airwaves to the celebration, broadcasting live from the centre. However, the day took an unexpected turn when enthusiastic service users Martin, Gary, and Jess commandeered the airwaves, taking control of Ben Tuffin’s afternoon show from 1 pm to 4 pm.

For Martin, a fervent Andover Radio devotee, the opportunity to be on the airwaves was nothing short of a dream come true. “I never imagined I’d have the chance to be on the radio,” Martin shared, his excitement palpable. “But thanks to Purple Oak Support and Andover Radio, here I am!”

Jen Parker, a dedicated staff member at Purple Oak Support, played a pivotal role in making Martin’s dream a reality. Working closely with Ben Tuffin, she orchestrated the takeover with precision and enthusiasm. “It was amazing to see Martin’s face light up when he realised he’d be hosting a segment on Andover Radio,” Jen recounted with a smile. “Events like these truly highlight the importance of community and inclusion.”

The three-hour show, curated entirely by the service users, was a testament to the power of empowerment and self-expression. From selecting their favourite tracks to conducting interviews with their support workers, Martin, Gary, and Jess seized the opportunity to showcase their personalities and talents.

“It was an honour to be a part of such a unique and heart warming moment,” remarked Ben Tuffin, Managing Director of Andover Radio. “Seeing the joy on Martin’s face as he hosted his segment was truly special. It’s moments like these that remind us why community radio is so vital.”

As the day came to a close, The Wellington Centre buzzed with a sense of fulfilment and camaraderie. Through the collaboration between Purple Oak Support and Andover Radio, a memorable milestone was marked in a way that exemplified the spirit of unity and empowerment within the local community.

In the words of Jen Parker, “Today was about more than just radio. It was about celebrating the abilities and passions of every individual, and showcasing the strength of community when we come together.”
