After the success of The Greatest Shows back in May and with the adult company’s rehearsals for Evita in full swing, it’s time for AMTC (Andover Musical Theatre Company) Starlights Youth Theatre to take centre stage with Sister Act, this August.
Starlights is the youth section of Andover Musical Theatre Company for, 11-17 year olds, and last year their praises where highly sung as they took on the characters of Sandy, Danny and co, in Grease. This year, Sister Act is on the menu.
Sister Act: The Musical is based on the hit 1992 film, starring Whoopi Goldberg, with music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Glenn Slater and the original book by Bill and Cheri Steinkellner.
Sister Act tells the story of Deloris Van Cartier, played by Amy Lloyd, after she is put into hiding, in a convent. Disguised as a nun, she rebels against the rigid lifestyle until she inspires the convent choir with her singing ability which induces an unbreakable bond of friendship with her Sisters, accompanied by an outstanding soundtrack.
The cast includes Starlights veterans Donna Doig as Mother Superior and Bethany Griffiths as Sister Mary Lazarus and a debut principle performance from Aurelia Rungen as Sister Mary Robert. Sister Act is sure to showcase Andover’s supreme, young talent. There are certainly some names to remember in this stellar cast!
Director, Carol Robinson, played a chorus nun in Sister Act when the adult company performed it three years ago and really enjoyed it. This inspired her to direct the youth version. Carol believes the show is going to be a huge hit with the local community, “The cast have worked so hard on this show and it really demonstrates the level of talent we have within the company. The songs have such a feel-good factor and directing this musical has been another incredible experience with the Starlights team!” Carol said.
