Poet's Corner

I started way up high,

Trickling down the mountains like a dripping tap.

I meandered over meadows.

I started where plants were emerald green,

And where mountains were lizards’ backs.

Beautiful birds flew over me’

As I rushed down the mountain.

Relaxing on my bed,

With vivid plants surrounding me.

Kingfishers flew over me

And landed on my side,

With fish tickling my belly.

I’m tranquil underneath the bright blue sky.

Kingfishers are my spies and they ate my ticklers.

My ticklers were like synchronized swimmers.

They ate my reeds.

I can hear a white noise,

I picked up speed.

I screamed as I zoomed down the waterfall,

Filling up my sink as rain comes tumbling down.

Trees were my soldiers standing tall,

Leaning to dip their fingers in my icy cold water.

I shilly-shallied across meadows.

Gradually I started to change,

Losing my freedom.

I travelled through cities.

I’m just a trickle of filth.

I’m full of rubbish and junk.

I’m full of plastic, that’s all I am.

I’ve lost all my friends.

I want to start my life again.

Nothing tickles me.

Nothing swoops into me.

I’m just a pointless bit of water.

Factories and skyscrapers tower over me.

Their drunkenesses

Vomiting their poisons into me.

Children come find me

And help me please!

About the author

Dan Hooks

Hi there my name is Dan Hooks and I am a poet.

My poetry has many diverse themes from madness to the mundane, from fantasy and fable to philosophical and the darkness of reality (whatever that is).

I have been writing since I was 18 and have inspired other artists such as Benjamin Heine who created an piece of art work called”filled with fire” from my poem called “Freedom”. That poem was inspired from a quote from Nelson Mandela saying “we are free to be free”. Writing I find is a collaborative process.

I have also written other poems which have been used in language courses in America, Canada and Australia. One of which is called “poem on identity” and the other one is “Antithesis”.

I have a soundcloud account in which I post poems to music and my spoken word pieces. I find spreading my work on various social media platforms really useful for presenting my work.

I am also fond of travelling and have climbed Mount Fuji in Japan visited Finland skied in both USA in keystone Colorado and Whistler in Canada. I find perspective can be found in travelling to other countries and it also helps you appreciate other cultures as well your own.
