Young carers name Andover’s spacecraft

Chapel Arts Space Programme SpayceMcSpaceFace

The space craft due to be sent into the atmosphere this Sunday (December 1st 2019) was officially named at Saturday’s day of workshops across the town.

Names such as ‘Dave’ and ‘Up Andover’ were considered, but it was the young people from Andover Young Carers (AYC) whose name was chosen by Chapel Arts Studios’ artist-in-residence Tom Mansfield.

Tom said, “There had been intense discussions to settle upon a name that reflected the spirit of the project and the people involved.

“The name chosen is SPAYCE McSPACEFACE (pronounced “Space McSpaceFace”, but with the AYC spelling included to reflect the participation of Andover Young Carers).”

Spayce McSpaceFace will take many poems, messages, images, sounds and stories shared by Andoverians up to the edge of space this coming Sunday (weather permitting – stand by for updates).

Local MP Kit Malthouse added his message to the mission, answering the question ‘What one thing do you love about Andover’, he told local radio station 95.9FM Andover Radio, “The thing that strikes me most about Andover is the people. They are friendly and welcoming. I have had more pats on the back here than in the rest of my entire career, so I think it’s the people that make this town.”

There is still time to add your message. Send your answer one or more of the following questions to Mission Control:

  • What’s your one favourite thing about Andover?
  • If you could change just one thing about Andover, what would it be?
  • If you could be anywhere in the universe, where would that be?

Messages will be included in the Spayce McSpace Face’s data banks and lunched into the stratosphere on Sunday. Send your answers to missioncontrol@chapelartsstudios.co.uk

For more information visit www.chapelartsstudios.co.uk/space. The launch of the spacecraft is planned during events which start on Sunday at 11am, outside the Guildhall in the high street.
