New equipment installed at Andover Leisure Centre could save lives in an emergency.
Special defibrillators, donated by Lloyds TSB staff, are now on hand at the Valley Leisure run centre to help if anyone has an unexpected problem with their heart while exercising.
Valley Leisure facilities manager, Chris Attrill said: “Fortunately, we don’t need this kind of thing often but it’s fantastic to have it close by if we do.
“People sometimes have no idea they have a issue with their heart. But a rapid response can save lives.”
Chris added: “This kind of equipment helped Premiership footballer Fabrice Muamba stay alive after his cardiac arrest on the pitch. People have a 75% increased chance of survival if they suffer a cardiac arrest when treated promptly with the defibrillation unit.
“We’re really very thankful for Lloyds TSB for this generous support. It’s a real benefit to our community.”
The money to buy the equipment was raised by Lloyds TSB colleagues during the Olympic Torch Relay passing through Andover. People working in Charlton Place and Keens House held a series of events including a silent auction, a raffle, dressing up and selling cakes.
Staff at the leisure centre have now been trained to use the defibrillators in an emergency.
Similar equipment was also bought with the funds for The Rapids at Romsey.
Valley Leisure runs the Andover Leisure Centre, Charlton Lakeside, The Rapids in Romsey and Knightwood Leisure Centre in partnership with Test Valley Borough Council.
