Poet's Corner

National poetry day 2019 on Andover radio 14.30 until 16.30

This is my truth

The truth is your favourite team,

Always Falling at the last hurdle,

When you are Dying for a cup of coffee,

To find the milk in the fridge

Is now curdled It’s dressing in a t-shirt

Then being caught in a midsummer storm

It’s being scared to ask her the question

And then always being left to wonder her answer.

The truth is a life long lover,

Swept away by the lies of a stranger

It’s A drunken walk back home in the dark

Not sensing the coming danger,

It’s having faith in people,

To find out they are really good liars,

It’s a pensioner feeling the cold in their bones,

Without money for fuel for the fire.

The truth is a clumsy sentence said in jest,

That breaks up a lifelong friendship,

It’s buying a shirt last minute online,

That’s too small when it is delivered,

It’s wanting to find your perfect love,

When she thinks that you never existed,

It’s wearing your heart on your sleeve,

And not watching as somebody breaks it.

The Most Precious Gift of All

Today was my Grandads birthday
He would have been a hundred and twenty three
Every time I visited him
He was there waiting for me

With his history books laid on his knee
He would start to read
He knew it was hard for me with my poor sight
The print was very tiny indeed

One day he handed me a parcel
“ Something special for our lass “
Me and Grandma don’t want you to struggle
This is for you to use in your Sunday School class

A black leather bound Bible
With lovely big bold text
I could read out loud like the others
No more feeling second best

I still have that very precious gift
I have never needed another
Inside is a special inscription
From your loving Grandad and Grandmother.

If I was a artist

If I was a artist,
I would draw a cat then a hat,
I would draw everything in my imagination
then I’ll make them come alive,
I’ll sell them in the jungle so the monkeys are inspired
I’ll make the world inspired as well.

Dan Hooks

Hi there my name is Dan Hooks and I am a poet.

My poetry has many diverse themes from madness to the mundane, from fantasy and fable to philosophical and the darkness of reality (whatever that is).

I have been writing since I was 18 and have inspired other artists such as Benjamin Heine who created an piece of art work called”filled with fire” from my poem called “Freedom”. That poem was inspired from a quote from Nelson Mandela saying “we are free to be free”. Writing I find is a collaborative process.

I have also written other poems which have been used in language courses in America, Canada and Australia. One of which is called “poem on identity” and the other one is “Antithesis”.

I have a soundcloud account in which I post poems to music and my spoken word pieces. I find spreading my work on various social media platforms really useful for presenting my work.

I am also fond of travelling and have climbed Mount Fuji in Japan visited Finland skied in both USA in keystone Colorado and Whistler in Canada. I find perspective can be found in travelling to other countries and it also helps you appreciate other cultures as well your own.
